About Unza Alumin Tuesday, 16 December 2008 | The Alumni Association of the University of Zambia In 2003 the University Administration decided to revive the Alumni Association. This had briefly existed in the 1990s, but had become inactive for a variety of reasons. In order to take advantage of all possible means of rehabilitating the university, it was necessary to bring the association back to life. To this end, a committee was appointed to spearhead the re-formation of the association which was spearheaded by Dr Habaatwa Mweene.
The association has now been registered under the name Alumni Association of the University of Zambia. Its premises are adjacent to the Public Relations Office. Although there is as yet no direct telephone number, one may call the main line 291777 and request for ext. 2408. The e-mail address is unzaalumni@unza.zm. The Alumni Association aims to develop closer links between former students of the university than have heretofore existed. It will keep them informed of developments in the University, while keeping track of their activities. The links fostered this way should make possible the participation of alumni in projects to develop and rehabilitate the University.
The activities of the Alumni Association are picking up. The association was formally launched on 13th August, 2005. Its objectives were given a boost when His Excellency the Republican President Mr. Levy Mwanawasa donated funds to the University for the rehabilitation of the floor he occupied in President Hostel while a student in the 1970s. The Bank of Zambia furnished the offices and already other donations have followed which give an idea of the potential impact the association could have. These have come from as far a field as the United States and the United Kingdom.
A variety of options are available for alumni to respond to the appeal of the association for assistance to the university. These include adoption of the room one occupied during one’s students days, adoption of a whole floor, support for library development and support for sports and recreation facility development. All these are detailed on the donation form, a copy of which is available on request and which is to be found on the association web page.
The Alumni Association has been structured in such a way as to be autonomous from the university. In particular, it has its own bank accounts, which will be audited by independent auditors on a yearly basis. The secretariat also sells T-shirts as a way of fundraising for the Association.
The Alumni Association appeals to all former students of the university to cooperate with it in developing a healthy relationship between them and the institution so that the university can successfully move forward. We are now in the process of creating our own website and will be embarking on an intensive membership recruitment drive nation wide starting 2007.
