MG 319 COMPUTER TECHNIQUES

Introduction to computers. Brief history of computers. Hardware. Software.
Hardware: Organisation of hardware, central processing unit, processors, input/output devices, terminals, external memory devices, other peripherals.
Software: Operating systems, compilers, assemblers, interpreters, application software, application packages.
Solving of problems: Development of algorithms, flowcharts, pseudo-code methods, program structure diagrams.
Programming: Structure and construction of programs. FORTRAN 77 is used as programming language. All the basic standard FORTRAN 77 statements are covered. Special attention is drawn to some statements due to their importance: IF block structures, DO statements, subroutines, functions, COMMON and DATA statements.
Numerical analysis: Approximating a root of an equation. Multiplication of matrices. Finding the area under a curve. Solving a system of linear equations.
Project: Students work on projects recommended by the respective department of the School of Mines.
