The University of Zambia School of Medicine is Zambia first and only medical school. It is situated at the Ridgeway campus wihich is oposite the University Teaching Hospital. The School of Medicine was established as an independent School of the University of Zambia in 1970. Pre-clinical teaching in Bachelor of science (Human Biology) and Clinical teaching in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgary, however, had started earlier in 1968. The first output of graduates with full medical qualifications was in 1973. Since then, the School has presented over 1200 medical doctors for the award of its joint degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. As a working unit of the University and of the Ministry of Health, tasks of the school of Medicine are three fold: medical training, medical care and advancement of the medical knowledge.These tasks are now being successfuly met by staff of the University Medical school and the UTH in a joint effort.
Mission Statement The mission of the School of Medicine is to provide quality education in health sciences producing competent graduates who value lifelong learning and are well prepared to undertake specialist training programmes and able to provide quality patient care and leadership in medical research that addresses the priority health needs of Zambia.
