UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA PRESS (UNZA PRESS) PROFILE
The University of Zambia Press (UNZA Press) is the publications department of the University of Zambia (UNZA).  It is a member of the Booksellers and Publishers Association of Zambia (BPAZ).  It was established by the UNZA authorities in 1989 by merging the Publications Office and the Material Resource Centre of the University.  The main objectives for the creation of UNZA Press are three:

  1. To stimulate and revitalise research within the University and the broader Zambian academic community and convey the results of such research to the world community of scholars, various organisational planners, administrators and individuals who may need such information in Zambia to bring development to the country.
  2. To exhibit high standards of book publishing and intellectual integrity, business ethics and soundness of design and manufacturing.
  3. To boost morale within the University community by ending dependence on foreign books.

At the time of its creation, UNZA Press as a department comprised two interdependent sections: publishing and printing.  Eventually, however, it became necessary for the two sections to split into independent departments so as to maximise production.  The measure would ensure that the publishing department concentrated on broadening its publishing base and the printing department concentrated on maximising profits from commercial jobs.  Hence the split occurred in late 1996.

The printing section, once transformed into a department was named UNZA Printer.  The publishing section, on the other hand, retained the name UNZA Press and assumed responsibility for the publications programme of the University.  UNZA Press broadened its vision and was restructured in order to enable it meet the new challenges.  The new structure was created with a view to strengthening the department’s publishing capacity.  Hence the structure allowed for a Publishing Manager, one Senior Editor and three Assistant Editors answerable to the Senior Editor.  The current structure with designated titles is: Publisher, Deputy Publisher and three Editors. To reinforce UNZA Press’ publishing capability, a Graphic Designer and a Typesetter were employed.  In order to ensure that the publications are distributed and marketed, a Marketing Officer and a Customer Services Officer were employed, and their joint efforts have produced positive results.  Supporting staff include a Secretary, a Stenographer, a Messenger, an Administrative Officer and a Cleaner.

The existence of a University cannot be meaningful if it does not publish the works of its scholars and researchers.  Thus one of the tasks of UNZA Press was to revive scholarly publishing which had all but died for the good part of a decade.  In 1996, therefore, UNZA Press accepted the challenge of revitalising the publication of scholarly works produced by Zambian academics and scholars.

To this end UNZA Press took up the responsibility of publishing six officially recognised scholarly journals, a monograph and selected books of an academic nature per year.  In addition, the Professorial Inaugural Lecture series was introduced.  Each publication is produced by a competent editorial board of University academics with appropriate qualifications.  UNZA Press however handles the administration and production of the publications apart from the secretariat for the editorial boards.

The publications cover a wide range of topics of relevance to the University academic community and for teaching purposes.  The six journals include:  African Social Research, Zango, Journal of Humanities, Journal of Science and Technology  and Zambia Law Journal.  The monograph is Zambian Papers.  African Social Research, Zango and Zambian Papers were once well known publications before their ‘death’ in the early 1980’s.  They had long subscriber lists from university libraries and subscription agents abroad.  Their reintroduction in 1996 was therefore welcome.  The publication of the Zambia Law Journal, however, continued even when the other journals went into oblivion largely due to continued support from the School of Law and funds realised from steady international subscriptions and local sales.

The revival of the ‘dead’ publications in 1996 also saw the introduction of the Journal of Humanities and the Journal of Science and Technology.

POSITIVE ACHIEVEMENTS SINCE RESTRUCTURING THE DEPARTMENT

  1. Re-introduction of publication of journals.
  2. Boosting the morale of academics by encouraging academic and scholarly publications.
  3. Acquisition of computers, thereby enabling the department to carry out the desktop publishing work within the department instead of sub-contracting.
  4. Employment of qualified manpower to handle all publishing aspects.
  5. A broad commercial services base which has increased revenue inflow.
  6. Improvement of quality of both journals and scholarly publications, in terms of research material and the final product.
  7. Decentralisation of operations, enabling the department to carry out business related publishing activities that are viable.
  8.  Re-establishment of the list of subscribers (old and new) to the journals both at home and abroad.
  9. Establishment of several sales outlets, for journals and books in Lusaka and other towns of Zambia.
