AETFAT 2022 LIVINGSTONE, ZAMBIA (27TH JUNE TO 1ST JULY 2022)

Theme: Diversity and Conservation of African Plants: Challenges and Oopportunities

AETFAT

The Association for the Taxonomic Study of the Flora of Tropical Africa (French acronym: AETFAT) is the premium association of botanists and plant conservationists with interest in African plants. Its members and collaborators are interested in the taxonomy, systematics, ecology, sustainable utilization, and conservation of plants. The association is a perfect example of commitment by individual scientists and institutions to use science to generate and communicate knowledge on the sustainable utilization and conservation of the diversity of African plants.

AETFAT 2022 CONGRESS - LIVINGSTONE, ZAMBIA

AETFAT 2022 Congress is the 22nd edition in a series of AETFAT congresses that have been held every three years in various parts of the world since the year 1951. This edition will be held in Livingstone, Zambia from 27th June – 1st July 2022.  The theme: Diversity and conservation of African plants: challenges and opportunities is expected to inspire ideas that will be instrumental for promoting resilience of Africa’s botanical resources in face of human population growth and climate change The outcomes of AETFAT 2022 will include comprehensive and cutting-edge information on African botanical research. The venue of the congress, Livingstone is the tourist capital of Zambia and home of the mighty Victoria Falls and therefore delegates will be able a have an experience of their lifetime.

OBJECTIVES OF AETFAT 2022

The objectives of AETFAT 2022 are to mobilize worldwide scientific expertise to:

  • Support scientific identification, naming and classification of African plants
  • Explain the relationships between African plants and the biotic and abiotic environments
  • Promote  sustainable utilization and conservation of African plants
  • To document flora of the different ecoregions of Africa
  • Stimulating interest in botany and plant taxonomy among young people
  • Contribution towards efforts to mitigate climate change
  • Contribute towards development of a green economy
  • Contribution towards efforts to mitigate deforestation
  • Contribution to the  vision 2030
  • Motivate the private sector institution to invest in plant products innovations and smart green growth
  • Mobilize development actors as partners in  the sustainable use and conservation of plant  biodiversity for the wellbeing of the citizens of Africa
  • Motivate  financial institutions to invest in the green economy
  • Address  the urgent need for plant conservation in Africa
  • To explain the role of Botanic Gardens/Plant Science supporting sustainable development
  • To explain the Biogeography of African Plants
  • To document advance in African Lichenology/Mycorrhiza/Mycology
  • To explain adaptations of African arid land plants
  • To showcase the status of Biodiversity informatics/Databases/DNA Bar-coding in Africa.
