The Urban Development Research Programme consists three (3) Research Fellows, namely Ms. Getrude Ngenda, Mr. Edward Chibwili and Dr. Joseph Simbaya who is the Programme Coordinator as well as the current Assistant Director of the Institute.

The programme focuses on the following research areas:

  • Urban governance, planning, the built environment and welfare
  • Urban population dynamics and development
  • Housing, domestic energy, waste management, health and the environment
  • Industrial location and distribution of goods and services
  • The labour market, urban livelihoods and entrepreneurship
  • Urban food markets and food security
  • Socio-economic infrastructure, Urban-Rural Interactions and Development
  • Urban environmental considerations
