  1. Introduction to Research Methods

The course is designed to impart participants with knowledge of social science research and its application to problem solving. The course targets programme managers, M&E officers and other decision makers, and researchers, who could enhance their research skills. The course covers the following broad subjects:

  • Identification of a research problem
  • Research designs and data collection methods
  • Quality in the research process (validity, reliability, replicability, integrity)
  • Data processing and analysis
  • Report writing and utilization of research results

  1. Quantitative and Qualitative Data Analysis

The course is designed to introduce participants to basic quantitative and qualitative methods of data analysis. The course uses a hands-on approach where participants practice various methods of data analysis using data sets. The course targets programme managers, M&E officers and other decision makers, and researchers, who could enhance their data analysis skills. The course covers the following broad subjects:

  • Basic qualitative and quantitative analysis methods
  • Techniques of data diagnosis
  • Qualitative data analysis using appropriate software (Atlas.ti, NVIVO)
  • Quantitative data analysis using appropriate software (SPSS, STATA)
  • Combining quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods


Entry Requirements

  • University/College qualifications
  • Working in research/planning/ monitoring and evaluation/ behavior change/public policy environments
  • For the data analysis course, some working knowledge of basic statistics
