Description

More than 150 children’s games observed in rural and urban Zambia in the 1980s are described in this book and interpreted in relation to the Chewa and Tumbuka world view.   The book was written as a record of Zambian culture for posterity, as a manual for use in school education and in performance programmes by children, and as a guide to cultural animators, social workers, creative writers, and organisations interested in children’s welfare.  The author hoped that it would help students to see that ways of learning and growing up in their own communities are worthy of respect and study,  get them to talk and write freely about themselves and the African traditions which had helped to shape them, and help them to view and deal with children in a more understanding and constructive way.
