Minister of Higher Education, Ho. Prof. Nkandu Luo. MP, has commended the University of Zambia (UNZA) for promoting critical aspects of good corporate governance through training and team building in transformational leadership. And Prof. Luo urged UNZA management and unions to promote industrial relations harmony through positive collective bargaining.
Hon. Prof. Luo said this when she officiated at a two-day training workshop organised for UNZA Management and the three unions (UNZALARU, UNZAPROSA and UNZAAWU) entitled ‘Embracing Transformation Leadership’ in Siavonga which was held from 9th to 10th March 2017.
Hon. Prof. Luo counselled both UNZA Management and the three unions that humility was the hallmark of good leadership and challenged all stakeholders to work as a team as UNZA belonged to everybody. She reminded participants that all public universities should take the lead in exhibiting exceptional leadership as they were the “crème de la crème”.
And UNZA Chairperson of the Caretaker Committee, Ms. Namucana Musiwa, encouraged Management and unions to promote team building based on common vision and objectives so as to come up with new ideas as well as skills to take up new challenges in running the university.
Ms Musiwa said that to achieve the desired future for the university, there was urgent need for a revolutionised paradigm shift coupled with teamwork.
Meanwhile, UNZA Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Luke Evuta Mumba, said that the training would assist in enhancing negotiation skills for both management and unions and called for staff to embrace transformational leadership as well as change in order to remain relevant in modern higher education business. Prof. Mumba challenged UNZA staff to acquire new skills in transformational leadership through continuous process of learning.
Giving a vote of thanks, UNZALARU General Secretary, Dr. Kelvin Mambwe, on behalf of the three unions, commended UNZA Management for organising such training as it had assisted in acquired new skills and knowledge in industrial relations matters and collective bargaining.
UNZA Management organised a two-day training workshop for all categories of staff union executives of UNZALARU, UNZAPROSU and UNZAAWU in Siavonga at Lake Kariba Inns from 9th to 10th March, 2017. The purpose of the training was threefold:
(i) to learn and share labour related knowledge with a view to reform the manner in which industrial related matters have been handled in the University in the past;
(ii) to re-affirm management’s continued commitment to working with various teams in the University, an aspect that is paramount in ensuring building effective work relations with various stakeholders of the University, key to which are the three staff Unions and the student Union; and
(iii) to educate both parties (management and unions) about the concepts of Industrial Relations, harmonization and rationalization.
