RESIDENT ENGINEER

PURPOSE: Responsible for managing activities pertaining to estate management, construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of University Infrastructure, plant and equipment.

Responisbilities
• Preparing and ensuring adherence to work plans
• Spearheading preparation of detailed inventory of all university infrastructure both mobile and fixed assets
• Spearheading formulation of maintenance plans for planned, unplanned and scheduled maintenance plans
• Representing the University on major construction projects to ensure that projects are built within the specified time frame, desired quality standards and attainment of value for money
• Spearheading provision of technical specification for preparation of tender documents for all university construction projects
• Presiding over the technical evaluation committee and directing the issuance of variation orders and site instructions
• Spearheading preparation and verification of final account for civil engineering and building construction projects
• Advising Management on cost implication on proposed construction projects and maintenance project e.g. life cycle costing
• Resolving design or construction problems and meeting with contractors and the public
• Directing the scrutinizing and approval of all civil engineering drawings prepared and submitted by the civil engineering contractors for University approved projects to ensure compliance to required standards
• Superintending over the preparations of bills of quantities and cost estimates for all in-house-work and the University tender documents for outside engineering works
• Directing the usage of computer aided engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents
• Directing the identification of project sites, and interpreting and analyzing reports, maps, drawings and tests on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics and other geological data to plan and design projects
• Supervising and appraising subordinate staff
• Ensuring the preparation of quarterly and annual operational performance reports
Qualifications
• Grade 12 School Certificate or its equivalent
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or any technical relevant field
• Member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia;
• Registered with the Engineers Registration Board
Attributes & Skills
Minimum of ten (10) years relevant experience and some supervisory experience; or equivalent training and experience in Civil Engineering department of any reputable organization
