In a decisive move toward securing Zambia’s energy future, the Zambia Renewable Energy Association (ZARENA) in partnership with the University of Zambia (UNZA) and the Copperbelt University (CBU) has officially launched the Zambia Annual Renewable Energy Conference (ZARECON) 2026.
The media launch, held in Lusaka, marks the beginning of a strategic journey toward the inaugural conference scheduled for late March 2026. The event aims to bridge the gap between policy, academia, and industry to address the nation’s urgent need for reliable and sustainable energy.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by Eng. Brian Mainza, the Honourable Minister of Energy, Makozo Chikote, MP, emphasised that energy is no longer just a sectoral issue but a cornerstone of national security and economic resilience.
“ZARECON 2026 comes at a defining moment,” the Minister stated. “We stand at the intersection of policy ambition and an urgent national need for sustainable energy systems that can power inclusive economic growth. The government’s role as a convener and enabler is to create an environment where private capital and innovation can thrive.”
Speaking at the same function the University of Zambia, Vice-Chancellor Professor Mundia Muya, reaffirmed the critical role of higher learning in the energy transition. Prof. Muya highlighted that infrastructure investment must be matched by a "highly skilled and competent workforce."
“UNZA recognises that sustainable energy solutions must be underpinned by rigorous academic inquiry and the university serves as a trusted bridge between research and practice, translating scholarly work into actionable solutions for Zambia’s renewable energy agenda,” Prof Muya said.
Meanwhile, ZARENA Board Secretary Eng. Chikuku Katebe described ZARECON 2026 as a "declaration of intent." She stressed that the conference is not merely a marketing expense but a strategic investment in the country’s future.
“We are encouraging researchers, practitioners, and innovators to submit abstracts. This platform is designed to shape dialogue and influence implementation that extends well beyond the conference itself,” Eng. Katebe noted.
And ZARENA Executive Director Eng. Dr. Chilala Kakoma Bowa revealed that a post-conference tracking framework will be established to monitor commitments, policy reforms, and investments made during the event.
About ZARECON 2026 Scheduled for March 25–27, 2026, the conference will focus on several thematic areas, including:
- Renewable Energy Technologies and Green Hydrogen
- The Energy-Water-Food Nexus
- Climate Resilience and Inclusive Financing
- Smart Grids and IoT-driven energy systems
As Zambia grapples with evolving climate challenges affecting traditional hydro-power, ZARECON 2026 is positioned as the premier platform to pioneer the policies and partnerships required to achieve energy security.
