University of Zambia (UNZA) Vice-Chancellor Professor Mundia Muya has officially welcomed the 2025/2026 cohort of first-year students, describing them as the "crème de la crème" selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants.

Speaking at the orientation ceremony held at the UNZA Sports Hall, Professor Muya revealed that the university received over 15,000 applications this year yet could only admit approximately 5,000 students. He emphasized that their admission was not accidental but the result of merit and perseverance.

"Many aspire to study at the University of Zambia. Few are selected. Today, you stand among the privileged few," Professor Muya stated. "By every measure, this places you among the best of the best," he said.

The Vice-Chancellor further cautioned the new students that university life differs fundamentally from secondary school, noting that they are now regarded as adults. He sternly reminded them that there are no bells to signal lectures, no teachers to chase them, and "no Parents Teachers Association" to intervene on their behalf.

"You will encounter new freedoms, new peer influences, and new pressures," he warned, urging students to avoid distractions and keep their eyes firmly on their goals.

Professor Muya also addressed the critical issue of student welfare and health. He advised students to take personal responsibility for their nutrition, noting that the university no longer provides central dining facilities. He specifically warned students to be vigilant against health risks, including sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies, cholera, and mpox.

Regarding campus conduct, the Vice-Chancellor called for exemplary behaviour, urging students to reject hooliganism, alcohol abuse, and disorderly conduct.

"University students are expected to resolve differences through dialogue, reason, and mutual respect," he said. "This is a community of scholars, a community of civilised intellectuals."

Professor Muya concluded by assuring the new students of Management’s commitment to providing a safe and intellectually stimulating environment, encouraging them to seek guidance from the Counselling Centre if they encounter difficulties.

The orientation programme was supported by several corporate and institutional partners, including the Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board (HELSB), ZANACO, Zamtel, Ecobank, Trade Kings, FNB, and MTN.
