The goal of the Department is to be a national, regional and international centre of excellence in surgical training, collaborative research and provision of the highest standard of surgical care.

The Department of Surgery is staffed with surgeons with training representing the entire spectrum of surgical experience. All faculty members have appointments with the University Teaching Hospital and actively engage in the academic mission of the Department of Surgery – teaching, clinical excellence and research.

We run internationally recognised undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in surgery and conduct a number of Continued Medical Education Courses such as:

  • The Zambia Trauma Management Course
  • Basic Surgical Skills Course
  • Male Circumcision Course
  • Non-Operative Management of Fractures
  • Laparoscopy Course
  • Burns Course

The Department enjoys collaboration with a number of professional bodies involved in surgical training locally and internationally. Notable among these are the Zambia Medical Association (ZMA), Surgical Society of Zambia (SSZ), College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA), Association of Surgeons of East Africa (ASEA), Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI), Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Ireland and Edinburgh (RCSI &RCSE), Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (AO/ASIF), Canadian Network of International Surgery (CNIS) and the Okanagan-Zambia Health Initiative (Oka-ZHI).The Department has grown by leaps and bounds in the last decade. This has seen an increase in the number of quality postgraduate programmes run by the department.We have positioned ourselves to play a pivotal role in the provision of surgical training, collaborative research and quality health care in Zambia now and in future!

The Department of Surgery in School of Medicine at the University of Zambia was established at inception when the School was established in 1966. Its mandate was to provide quality training, research and clinical care in the field of surgery and its specialities.

General Surgery

General surgery is a discipline that requires knowledge of and familiarity with a broad spectrum of diseases that may require surgical treatment. Currently the Department has five (5) General Surgical firms namely: Blue, Green, Yellow, White and Red.

Orthopaedics & Trauma

Orthopaedics is the surgical specialty that focuses on injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. This includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves that allow the body to move, work, and be active.There are five (5) Orthopaedic Units in the Department named I-V

Urology

This is the specialty concerned with the urinary system in the male and female and genital organs in the male. There are two (2) urology Units in the Department of Surgery

Anaesthesia

This is the branch of medicine concerned with artificially inducing insensitivity to pain by the administration of gases or the injection of drugs before surgical operations.

Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery is a specialized field of surgery for the treatment of diseases or conditions of the central nervous system (CNS) and spine.

Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is the surgical specialty dealing with the anatomy, functions, and diseases of the eye.

Paediatric Surgery

Pediatric surgery is a specialized field of surgery for the treatment of conditions that can be surgically corrected in a baby, child, or adolescent.

Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery

Also known as otorrhinolaryngology this is the surgical specialty that focuses on treatment of diseases and problems of the ears, nose and throat.

Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the specialty that treats diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity

Dental Surgery

This is the branch of dentistry or of surgery dealing with the surgical treatment or repair of various conditions of the mouth or jaws

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Plastic surgery and Reconstructive Surgery is the surgical specialty dedicated to reconstruction of facial and body defects due to birth disorders, trauma, burns, and ddisease.

Cardiac Surgery

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in surgical treatment of diseases affecting organs inside the chest.
