BACHELOR OF HEALTH PROMOTION (B.HP)

WHY HEALTH PROMOTION?   

This Bachelor of Health Promotion is a response to the increased need for human resources that will improve the health of individuals, groups and communities. The program is intended to train a cadre of professionals who will provide leadership in tackling the social determinants of health such as lifestyles and behaviours and the underlying societal factors such as cultural practices, poverty, inequalities, deprivation and discrimination, through research and practice. This course is designed to equip students with the theoretical and practical skills required for a career in health promotion. Students will learn how to identify the health needs of individuals, groups and communities, develop people’s skills and knowledge in health, advocate for policies and laws that support healthy choices and plan, implement and evaluate health promotion activities. It is an ideal major for students interested in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, public health, epidemiology, health psychology, and health behaviour research. The graduates from the program will be expected to take-up positions in government, civil society organizations and international development initiatives.

AIM OF THE PROGRAMME

The overall aim of the program is in accordance with the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) which is to produce graduates who will contribute to improvement of equity in health, reduce health risks, promote healthy lifestyles and settings, and respond to the underlying determinants of health.

VISION

To be able to provide regionally compatible high-quality health promotion professionals who can effectively participate in health care and research in order to contribute to improved health outcomes in Zambia.

MISSION

The mission of the program is to provide quality education in health promotion, producing competent graduates who value lifelong learning and are well prepared to undertake specialist training programs to implement and evaluate evidence based interventions and develop a strong foundation in research for promoting health and wellbeing.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Graduates of the program are expected to be accomplished administrators, managers, researchers and implementers. Due to their versatility and problem solving skills, they may primarily be employed and perform jobs in many settings some of which may include roles in Administration and Managing in diverse organisations not limited to the following:

  • Professional associations
  • Colleges and Universities
  • Policy making processes
  • Public health agencies
  • Industry
  • Public and private sector
  • Research agencies

    FIRST YEAR ENTRY

    • A minimum of five ‘O’ level passes at Credit or better which include English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology/Agricultural Science; or English, Mathematics, Physical Science/Combined Science, Biology/Agricultural Science and any other subject.

    SECOND YEAR ENTRY - ‘A’ LEVELS HOLDERS

    • ‘A’ level candidates may be admitted on the programme at second year if they have the following;
    • 3 ‘A’ level passes in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology or Physics and
    • At least Credit in Biology or Physics if not taken in (i) above

    THIRD YEAR ENTRY - IN-SERVICE

    • Minimum Entry requirements for all candidates are as follows:
    • Diploma or degree in any health related field
    • Valid practicing license (Applicable to specific field)
