Department of Economics

Welcome to the Department of Economics in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, a leading institution for economics training in Zambia. The Department of Economics offers a range of academic and professional programmes in economics. At the undergraduate level, the Department runs the Bachelor of Arts in Economics (major) and the Bachelor of Business Administration (major) programmes. The Department offers three postgraduate programmes namely the Master of Arts in Economics, PhD in Economics by research only, and PhD by coursework plus thesis.

In addition, since 2008 the Department has been offering the Master of Arts in Economic Policy Management programme which is a regional programme designed to build capacity in economic policy among workers in the public service in the Southern African region. The Department is a founder member of the African Economic Research Consortium headquartered in Nairobi. Staff in the Department are involved in applied research in various fields including trade, health economics, poverty, agricultural economics, monetary economics, public sector economics, and environmental economics, which also feeds into the teaching curricula. The Department collaborates with leading global research institutions on a various research activities. Locally, we provide technical expertise to various government institutions such as line ministries, the Bank of Zambia, the Central Statistical Office.  We also have links with the Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research (ZIPAR) and the Economics Association of Zambia (EAZ).
