The Department of Midwifery, Women’s and Child Health is one of the five departments in the School of Nursing Sciences at the University of Zambia. The department offers three midwifery programmes at undergraduate (Bsc Midwifery) and at post graduate level: Msc Midwifery and Women’s Health and PhD Midwifery. The aim of the department is to graduate high calibre midwives with knowledge, skills and appropriate attitudes that promotes reproductive health and contribute to national development through teaching, research and consultancy. To achieve our goals, the department has adopted innovative ways of teaching midwifery skills through simulation and evaluate students’ levels of competence by using Objective Structured Clinical examinations in addition to Direct Observed Procedural skills.
The department has experienced academic staff in Midwifery, Reproductive Health, Research and midwifery education. Modern skills laboratory equipment enables the academic staff to offer a competence based curriculum that meets the reproductive health needs of the clients. The department has proved to be a useful platform for consultancy and research activities to assist the Zambian government through the General Nursing Council of Zambia to shape the midwifery training and practice. It also offers technical support and capacity building to other institutions of higher education in implementation of innovative ways of teaching midwifery skills through simulation and clinical assessments using Objective Structured Clinical examinations.
Students wishing to pursue midwifery related courses at Bachelors, Masters and PhD level are assured of a qualification that is internationally acceptable and will be able to function in public and different institutions of learning and reproductive health service delivery.
