CELEBRATING CHINESE NEW YEAR, EXPERIENCING CHINESE CULTURE

Having new year's Eve dinner, Tasting delicious Chinese cuisine!

(Chinese Spring Festival celebrating activities at Ndola School for Continuing Education)

On February 12th, 2018, on the run to the Spring Festival--the Chinese traditional festival, Ndola School for Continuing Education teaching center carried out celebration activities with the theme of “Celebrating Chinese new year, Experiencing Chinese culture; Having new year's Eve dinner, Tasting delicious Chinese cuisine”. The principal Mr. Malama and all HSK level 1 students participated in the celebration.

Firstly, Mr. Malama and all students wished all Chinese people a happy new year of Dog and all the best for 2018.

Secondly, teacher Liuwei had a brief introduction to everyone about Chinese New Year, New Year’s Customs, celebration activities and Spring Festival’s delicacy. This made everyone to have a deep understanding about Chinese New year and the beauty of this biggest festival in China.

Teacher Liu Wei later organized everyone to watch the video about Chinese New year, from Harbin—the most-northern part of China to Beijing; and from Kunming to Hong Kong. Everything was being introduced in detail about the festival of the largest migration on earth; and all understood the Chinese new year’s folkways and the profound meanings of reunion and blessing.

The next important activity was the making of dumplings! “Dumplings are the traditional Chinese cuisine, symbolizing reunion and wealth”….. Teacher Liu Wei demonstrated to everyone how dumplings are made as he explained, from mixing the wheat flour and water to mixing the stuffing; from rolling to wrapping……this made the pupils happy and they were enthusiastic to try. One student a boy, made dumplings which were better than the ones made by most girls. After everyone's hard work, the dumplings appeared beautiful.

Finally, it was New year's Eve dinner! For helping the students to truly feel the charm of Chinese year, teacher Liu Wei personally prepared the most popular Chinese food for everyone: peacocks-shaped steamed fish, Bouilli, Eight-treasures Rice, Mapo Tofu, Gongbao chicken, Corn flipping, Fried rice with eggs….. The teacher even explained the meaning and practices of each dish to everyone. While listening, the students could not help but seized the chopsticks and unskillfully picked up the dishes... "delicious! Chinese food is so delicious, I would like to learn how to cook Chinese food! "……One of the teachers complimented happily. Another teacher said: "I will learn Chinese language first and go to China to eat more Chinese food!"…… Teacher Liu Wei explained to everyone that, "New year's Eve dinner symbolizes family reunion and happiness. Today we are here to have dinner together on New year's Eve, implying that we are a family, loving each other, and we have come together to say goodbye to the old year and welcome to a wonderful New year" …..

Through this activity, everyone had a happy and meaningful Chinese 'Spring Festival.’ They all appreciated the Spring Festival’s connotations and charms, and tasty delicious Chinese cuisine. At the same time, it also deepened their understanding about China and Chinese culture, and strengthened their determinations to study Chinese language extra hard.
